A fast-growing member of the Mucorales (sometimes called “pin moulds”), M. racemosus produces greyish-white, cottony growth, often sprouting delicate sporangia. It flourishes on decaying organic matter, damp fabrics, and in HVAC filters if these remain moist. In immunocompromised individuals, inhalation can lead to mucormycosis, a severe infection. Routine cleaning of heating and cooling systems and preventing water accumulation are vital to control this fungus.
