Distinguished by its vivid orange to brownish-black colonies, E. nigrum grows on decaying plant matter outdoors and can invade damp indoor walls or flooring. Its spores are readily aerosolised, sometimes causing allergic reactions or respiratory irritation. Effective moisture control and regular cleaning of affected surfaces help minimise its establishment.
