This species is a predominant airborne fungus found globally, thriving on decomposing vegetation such as compost heaps. In Australian homes, A. fumigatus may colonise poorly maintained air-conditioning systems and other damp niches. Although it is often harmless in small quantities, it poses a significant risk to immunocompromised individuals, potentially causing aspergillosis, a serious pulmonary infection. Effective ventilation and prompt repair of moisture issues can help minimise indoor growth.
