Bioaerosol sampling is the process of collecting and analyzing air samples to quantify and identify airborne biological particles, such as mould spores, bacteria, or viruses. In the context of mould, this method helps occupational hygienists determine if spore counts exceed normal background levels and whether certain toxigenic species are present. Various sampling techniques exist, including impactors that capture spores on agar plates for laboratory culturing, as well as cassette-based systems that trap particles on filters for microscopic examination.
The value of bioaerosol sampling lies in its ability to provide objective, data-driven insights into indoor air quality. A visual inspection might reveal surface mould growth, but it doesn’t necessarily reflect the concentration of spores circulating in the air. Conversely, hidden mould behind walls or in HVAC systems might not be immediately visible, yet can still significantly elevate spore counts. By measuring the type and quantity of spores, safety professionals can gauge the severity of a contamination event and plan remediation accordingly.
Sampling is often performed before and after remediation to ensure that corrective actions have effectively reduced mould levels. However, it’s crucial to interpret the results within context—some presence of airborne spores is normal, given that outdoor air also contains fungal spores. The goal is to ensure that indoor levels and species align more closely with outdoor “background” conditions, minimizing any additional health risks to building occupants.
