Emphysema, characterised by damaged alveoli in the lungs, can worsen when exposed to airborne irritants, including mould spores. Increased coughing or breathlessness may occur. Robust control of indoor humidity and improved filtration of air may reduce the burden of airborne spores and mitigate symptom flare-ups.
