A major culprit behind post-harvest fruit decay, especially in apples and pears, P. expansum produces soft, water-soaked spots covered by blue-green spore masses. It may generate patulin, a mycotoxin that poses health risks if ingested. Indoors, stored or forgotten produce in warm, humid conditions becomes a prime target for infestation. Proper refrigeration, prompt disposal of spoiled items, and good kitchen hygiene can significantly reduce its occurrence.
