Consuming foods contaminated with mould or their toxins (e.g. spoiled grains, nuts with Aspergillus producing aflatoxins) may cause digestive upset or, over time, liver damage in extreme cases. Acute symptoms range from nausea and diarrhoea to more serious effects if high doses of toxins are ingested. Ensuring proper food storage, discarding spoiled products, and monitoring for mould presence are critical.
