Exhibiting yellowish-green colonies, P. citrinum is known to produce citrinin, a toxin implicated in kidney damage (in high doses). It often appears on damp building materials, cereals, and even some cheeses. In household environments, it can contribute to musty odours and potential allergic reactions. Addressing underlying moisture issues, such as leaks, and ensuring that cereals are stored in dry conditions are important for limiting its spread.
