Found predominantly in Southeast Asia but also reported in tropical parts of Australia, P. marneffei is unique for producing a distinctive red pigment on culture media. Pathogenic mainly to immunocompromised individuals, it can cause severe systemic infections (penicilliosis). In indoor settings, it is relatively rare; however, moisture and poor ventilation could foster its growth. Swift medical diagnosis and treatment are essential if infection is suspected.
