Caused by fungi in the order Mucorales, mucormycosis typically affects people with poorly controlled diabetes or severe immunosuppression. Spores can be inhaled into the sinuses or lungs, sometimes spreading to the brain. Early symptoms can be sinus pain, fever, or black necrotic lesions in nasal tissues. Immediate antifungal treatment and surgical debridement are critical to improving survival rates.
