Produces conspicuously black spores and is generally found on decaying plant material outdoors. Indoors, it can appear in overly damp spots, sometimes leaving a dark powdery residue. Though not commonly pathogenic, its airborne spores can irritate mucous membranes. Reducing excess moisture and regularly cleaning neglected, humid areas (like basements) will keep populations low.
