Cross-contamination in the context of mould refers to the spread of mould spores (and potentially mycotoxins) from an affected area to otherwise clean or unaffected parts of a building. This often occurs when contaminated materials are moved or disturbed without proper containment measures, causing spores to become airborne and settle on new surfaces. In remediation work, cross-contamination can drastically increase the scope and cost of cleaning by creating multiple mould “hot spots.”
Several factors contribute to cross-contamination: inadequate containment barriers, improper use of negative air pressure, poor waste disposal procedures, or even employee foot traffic through the contaminated zone. For instance, if workers exit an uncontained remediation area wearing contaminated clothing, they can track spores into hallways, offices, or other sections of the facility. Similarly, opening windows or running fans in a mould-infested room can disperse spores to neighboring rooms.
Preventing cross-contamination requires a systematic approach. Proper containment using plastic sheeting and sealed entryways is crucial, often coupled with negative air pressure systems to ensure that air moves into the contaminated space rather than outward. Additionally, strict protocols for the removal and disposal of mould-affected materials—such as double-bagging waste and cleaning or discarding contaminated PPE—are essential. Following these guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of spreading spores, ensuring the remediation process is both effective and cost-efficient. In turn, it helps maintain a safer environment for workers throughout the building.
