If the spores come from toxigenic mould species, there is an added risk of exposure to harmful mycotoxins.
The concentration of spores in the air is a critical factor in determining health risk. Occasional low-level exposure may not cause problems for most healthy adults, but consistent high-level exposure can be dangerous. Workplaces that are prone to dampness—like basements, poorly ventilated storage rooms, or locations with frequent water leaks—can quickly accumulate significant spore counts. Regular inspection and remediation, alongside proper ventilation and humidity control, are central to managing spore-related hazards. In many professional settings, occupational hygienists will perform air sampling and analysis to identify the types and concentrations of fungal spores, informing more targeted control measures.
