The agent of sporotrichosis, known as “rose gardener’s disease,” S. schenckii lives in soil and plant material, especially thorny plants and sphagnum moss. Indoors, it is usually limited to contaminated plant matter or potting mix. Infection typically occurs through puncture wounds rather than inhalation. Wearing gloves when handling thorny plants or moss and keeping soil-based materials clean and contained are sensible precautionary measures.
