A close relative of A. pullulans, A. melanogenum also forms darkly pigmented colonies, often on damp wood, paper products, or other cellulose materials. It may exacerbate respiratory issues, particularly in individuals with pre-existing allergies or asthma. Good ventilation, periodic cleaning of damp-prone areas, and swift remediation of water leaks can significantly reduce the likelihood of heavy colonisation.
