Primarily infecting citrus fruits, P. digitatum forms greenish colonies on the rind, often emitting a strong, musty odour. Indoors, discarded fruit in rubbish bins or fruit bowls can quickly become a growth substrate. While not usually dangerous to healthy individuals, it diminishes food quality and can release spores that irritate the respiratory system. Regular disposal of decaying fruit and cleaning of storage areas help minimise infestations.
