Formerly called Fusarium moniliforme, this species contaminates maize and can produce fumonisins—mycotoxins hazardous to both livestock and humans. Indoors, it may grow around stored feed or grain or on water-damaged surfaces containing cellulose. High spore counts can be risky if inhaled, underscoring the importance of sealing and storing grains in cool, dry conditions. Regular inspection of susceptible areas is advisable.
