Similar to M. racemosus, M. circinelloides forms cottony, white-grey colonies with sporangia that may darken with maturity. Common in soil and compost heaps, it can enter buildings through contaminated air or organic matter. While it rarely infects healthy hosts, it can cause mucormycosis in those with weakened immune systems. Ensuring organic debris is disposed of and surfaces are kept dry will lessen the likelihood of growth.
