A darkly pigmented fungus prevalent on decaying plant debris, P. herbarum can show up in damp indoor environments (e.g. bathrooms, kitchens) where it may form dark stains. Spores can be irritants and potentially aggravate respiratory complaints. As with most moulds, controlling humidity and promptly fixing leaks or ventilation problems are effective preventive measures.
