Often forming dry, powdery colonies that may range in colour from white to brown, S. brevicaulis is a common inhabitant of damp walls, decaying wood, and sometimes old books or paper. It can cause fungal nail infections and, less commonly, respiratory irritation. Sealing off entry points for moisture, maintaining adequate ventilation, and removing severely contaminated items are key to prevention.
