A halophilic (salt-loving) and xerotolerant mould, W. sebi readily grows on foods with high sugar or salt content—such as dried fruits, cured meats, and salted fish. In indoor settings, it can contaminate poorly sealed or stored pantry products. Although infections are rare, spore inhalation may provoke allergies. Maintaining dry storage conditions and checking expiration dates can help reduce this mould’s presence.
