Infamously known as the “dry rot” fungus, S. lacrymans can devastate structural timber in buildings. Despite the name “dry rot,” it still requires moisture to initiate growth but can spread extensively once established, even in drier conditions by drawing moisture from other areas. It produces rust-coloured spores and can lie dormant until conditions become suitable. Professional assessment and intervention are often necessary to control widespread infestations in timber structures.
