Rare but possible when fungal pathogens (including some moulds) invade the heart valves, typically in immunocompromised or intravenous drug users. Symptoms might include persistent fever, heart murmur, and embolic phenomena. Diagnosis requires blood cultures and echocardiography. Fungal endocarditis demands prolonged antifungal therapy and, sometimes, surgical valve replacement.
