Prolonged or severe inflammatory responses to mould allergens may, in theory, contribute to fibrotic scarring within the lungs. Direct evidence is limited, but any persistent insult to lung tissue has the potential to accelerate fibrotic processes. Identifying and eliminating mould sources is advisable for anyone with chronic or unexplained lung changes.
