MVOCs, or Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds, are gaseous substances produced by actively growing mould and other microorganisms. These compounds often impart a distinctive musty, earthy, or sometimes pungent odor, which can serve as an early warning sign of hidden mould growth in a building. While the mere presence of a musty smell does not confirm toxic mould or significant spore counts, it does indicate that microbial activity is occurring somewhere in the environment.
Exposure to MVOCs can have varied health effects. For some individuals, the smell alone can be irritating or trigger mild discomfort, such as headaches or nausea. Others, particularly those with chemical sensitivities or underlying health conditions, may experience more pronounced reactions. Although research on the direct toxicity of MVOCs is ongoing, their role in contributing to poor indoor air quality is well recognized. When combined with other factors—like high spore counts or damp conditions—MVOCs can compound the overall risk to occupants’ respiratory health.
Addressing MVOCs typically involves source identification and remediation. Simply masking the odor with air fresheners is ineffective and may even be harmful if it delays proper action. Investigating the root cause (e.g., hidden water leaks, damp materials) and removing the mould growth is essential. In addition, ensuring adequate ventilation and maintaining humidity in the recommended range (30–50%) can mitigate MVOC buildup and prevent recurrent mould problems.
