Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is the last line of defence in the hierarchy of controls, used when hazards cannot be completely eliminated or reduced through engineering or administrative measures. In mould-related work, PPE can be essential to protect individuals from inhaling spores or coming into contact with mycotoxins. Typical PPE for mould remediation includes respirators (often P2 or N95 masks), gloves, goggles or face shields, and protective clothing such as Tyvek suits.
Respirators help filter out airborne spores and other particulates, while goggles protect the eyes from irritants. Gloves and coveralls minimize skin contact with contaminated surfaces. These protective measures are crucial when disturbing mould-colonized materials—sawing or cutting mouldy drywall, for example, can release large quantities of spores into the air.
However, PPE is only effective if it is properly selected, fitted, and used. A poorly fitting respirator may allow spores to bypass the filter, negating its protective benefits. Workers must also be trained in donning and doffing techniques to avoid cross-contamination. For instance, removing gloves or suits improperly can spread spores to clean areas or onto the wearer’s skin and clothing. Employers have a duty to assess the need for PPE, provide the correct equipment, and ensure that employees know how to use it safely. Regularly revisiting PPE protocols is advisable, especially if conditions change or if new information about mould toxicity or exposure levels emerges.
